Silversun Pickups on MTV Unplugged

A few months ago MTV finally remembered "oh yeah! we're supposed to be about music!" and began showing videos in the morning again. Last month, they revived the beloved MTV Unplugged series by splicing the performance of British jazz-pop singer Adele into that afformentioned morning block of Videos. The next band for for the new MTV Unplugged? L.A. shoegazers Silversun Pickups. The band performed six of their songs: "Well Thought Out Twinkles", "Catch and Release", "Panic Switch", "Kissing Families", "Growing Old is Getting Old" and "Lazy Eye" for the show. A link to the Unplugged website and the videos is here.

In a few months, Vampire Weekend will also perform the same amount of songs for the same program.

Video of the Day: "Can't Look Down" by Zox

Along with Les Savy Fav (who later moved to New York City) and Lightning Bolt, the alternative/reggae/ska band Zox is probably the most successful band to come out of my home state of Rhode Island since The Throwing Muses. This is video for their 2005 single "Can't Look Down" from their excellent album The Wait.

New Arctic Monkeys Single released

Yesterday, Arctic Monkeys debuted their new single "Crying Lightning" on the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1 and then released the single on iTunes.

A bunch of blogs have the single up on their site, but the one i'm linking to is We All Want Someone To Shout For, whose post which features an MP3 of the song is here.

"Crying Lightning" is really, really good, too.

UK Chart News: 7/5/09

  • The death of Michael Jackson continues to have a major effect on the chart, as even more of his hits return to the chart this week. Jackson died on a Thursday, so the chart, compiled on a Sunday, showed that Jackson's music was in very high demand in the few days after his death. This week's chart shows that even more. Many of the songs that returned to the chart last week have actually jumped several places, notably "Man in the Mirror" which makes a jump from #11 to #2. The other Jackson songs in the Top 40 are: "Billie Jean" (up from #25 to #10), "Thriller" (up from #23 to #11), "Smooth Criminal" (up from #28 to #12), "Beat It" (up from #30 to #19), "Black Or White" (up from #45 to #25), "Dirty Diana" (up from #50 to #26), "They Don't Care About Us" (up from #67 to #32), "Earth Song" (up from #38 to #33), "The Way You Make Me Feel" (up from #47 to #34), "You Are Not Alone" (up from #44 to #35), "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" (up from #48 to #38) and "Bad" (up from #57 to #40). That gives Jackson a probably record breaking 13 songs in the Top 40. There's most likely more in the rest of the Top 75.
  • "Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)" by Florence and the Machine falls from #12 to #18 on the singles chart
  • On the album chart, Flying High, the third solo album from former UB40 lead singer Ali Campbell, debuts at #13.

Former NFL QB Steve McNair found shot in Nashville

These last two week have been filled to the brim with celebrity deaths including those of Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Sky Saxon, Billy Mays, Karl Malden, Mollie Sugden, Allen Klien and Herve Presnall. Now in what is probably the most shocking off all, former American football player Steve McNair was found shot to death in an apartment in Nashville, Tennessee this afternoon. The quarterback was 36.

McNair was best known for his tenure with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans franchise.

We normally don't report about sports, but i'm making an exception for this shocking turn of events.

Video of the Day: "Special" by Mew

Danish alt-prog act Mew have a new coming out this year called No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away or just No More Stories... for short (as to confuse us, the band is releasing an EP called just No More Stories a few weeks before the album's release). That album's first two singles, "Introducing Palace Players" and "Repeaterbeater" are floating around the net right now, but here's the video for their best known song, "Special" from their wonderful 2005 release And The Glass Handed Kites.

US Chart News: 7/2/09

  • On the Billboard Hot 100, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon is up from #23 to #20
  • On the Billboard 200 album chart, Regina Spektor's new album, Far, debuts at #3. The Mars Volta's Octahedron debuts at #12. Dinosaur Jr.'s Farm debuts at #29. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix is up from #71 to #66. Swoon by Silversun Pickups is up from #105 to #99
  • Now you might be asking "Where's the Michael Jackson in the Billboard 200?". Well, there isn't any. This is because older albums that have dropped off the Billboard 200 are not allowed to return to the chart like in the UK. Older, or "catalog" albums have their own chart, Top Pop Catalog. There, Jackson holds the top 9 spots, stopped only from having a stranglehold on the chart by the soundtrack to Woodstock. Here's what charted on that chart: Number Ones (#1), The Essential Michael Jackson (#2), Thriller (#3), Off the Wall (#4), Jackson 5's The Ultimate Collection (#5), Bad (#6), Dangerous (#7), HIStory (#8) and The Ultimate Collection (#9).
  • On the Modern Rock/Alternative Tracks chart, "No You Girls" by Franz Ferdinand is up from #9 to #7. "I've Got Friends" by Manchester Orchestra jumps from #14 to #10.

Sky Saxon of the Seeds dead at 63

Yesterday, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died, but another celebrity of importance also met his end. Sky Saxon was the lead singer and bassist for the 60's garage rock band The Seeds, who in 1966 had a hit single with "Pushin' Too Hard". Along with other garage rock bands around at the same time such as The Sonics and The Monks, The Seeds are often considered to be among the influences of the later punk rock movement. Saxon was 63 years old.

Michael Jackson is dead

Even though this is an indie/alternative rock blog, I just feel that I needed to say something about the passing of Michael Jackson, one of the most popular and influential performers of the last several decades. I turned on MSNBC around 5:45 (eastern time) yesterday to bide my time before a film on Turner Classic Movies came on, and the news anchor (possibly that new Ed guy) reported that Michael Jackson had been rushed to the hospital, then a while after that it was reported he was in a coma, then merely seconds after that report, he was dead.

I'm not a big fan of Michael Jackson, but his influence on popular culture since he first appeared in America's living rooms in October of 1969 as a member of the Jackson 5 is undeniable. Despite his falling out with most of the media and the American public in the mid-90's, his music from the 80's (and I guess a few songs from Dangerous and History from the 90's) is timeless. He will be missed by everyone in the music industry, be they the head of his record company or some kid with an indie rock blog like myself.

Yesterday I reported here on the breakup of the Brooklyn indie rock band Oxford Collapse. As an example of how excellent this band was, here's the video for their 2006 single "Please Visit Your National Parks" from their criminally underrated third album Remember the Night Parties.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
